WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 25th-ranked Purdue wrestling team dropped a 35-6 contest to visiting third-ranked Big Ten foe Ohio State University on Friday night at Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers scored wins at 125 and 197 pounds on the night, falling to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in conference duals, while the Buckeyes rolled to 13-1 (2-0 Big Ten).
Purdue freshman Cashé Quiroga got the Boilermakers off to a solid start, earning his first win of the season over a ranked opponent as he knocked off No. 18 Nikko Triggas in dominating fashion, 7-1. The majority of the first period went back and forth with both wrestlers scoring near takedowns over the first two and a half minutes, but Quiroga broke the scoreless tie in the waning seconds of the frame with a slick shot and score to end the first with a 2-0 lead. After a neutral start to the second, Quiroga pushed his lead to 4-0 with a quick double-leg takedown and quickly released Triggas to make it 4-1 after two periods. In unorthodox style, the Buckeye junior took the top position to start the final period, and after a few attempts at an armbar series, Quiroga wiggled away for a 5-1 edge and sealed the match in the last 20 seconds with a third and final takedown.
The 133-pound bout was all Ohio State as Ian Paddock rolled to an 8-0 major decision over Purdue junior Akif Eren. Neither side scored in the first, but Paddock put up five points in the second and a takedown and riding-time point in the third for the bonus point and 4-3 team lead.
Purdue junior Juan Archuleta and second-ranked Ohio State senior Reece Humphrey put on a show at 141, going almost a full nine minutes before a 3-1 sudden victory for Humphrey. Despite the lack of scoring, the match featured a lot of action, including an acrobatic series in the first period. Humphrey snagged a single leg, elevating it as he looked for a takedown, but Archuleta responded with a flip and roll, freeing his leg, and snaring his opponents to work for his own takedown. However, Humphrey slipped away quickly and neither side was able to gain the advantage. The two wrestlers traded escapes to start the second and third, ending regulation in a 1-1 tie. The one-minute overtime nearly went the distance as both sides worked hard for a takedown, but it was Humphrey who managed to convert, scoring in the final seconds for the 3-1 win.
The Buckeyes picked up more bonus points at 149 pounds as third-ranked Lance Palmer downed Boilermaker senior Sam Patacsil by major decision, 10-1, and another Buckeye decision followed at 157 pounds as freshman Tony Jameson upset Purdue junior Colton Salazar, 5-2, en route to a 14-3 lead. Salazar took an early lead on Jameson, but the Buckeye rookie took the match to the mat in the second and third frames and took the upper hand with a full two-minute ride in the second and a reversal in the third.
The match went out of reach for the Old Gold and Black after the intermission as Ohio State's seventh-ranked Colt Sponseller posted a 21-6 technical fall over Purdue senior Jason Martin at 165 pounds and the Boilermakers gave a six-point forfeit win to 12th-ranked Buckeye Dave Rella at 174 pounds, making it a 25-3 Ohio State lead. The Buckeye's ninth-ranked senior Mike Pucillo kept the run going at 184 pounds as he rolled to a 13-1 major decision over Purdue senior Nick Corpe to make it 29-3 Buckeyes after eight matches.
Purdue's 11th-ranked junior Logan Brown snapped the streak at 197 pounds, scoring his 27th win of the season and improving to 3-0 in Big Ten Duals as he blanked Ohio State freshman Cody Magrum, 4-0. Brown dominated the entire match as he scored the bout's only takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead and then rode Magrum throughout the second period to lock up a riding-time point. Brown escaped quickly in the third period and nearly scored another takedown in the waning seconds, but settled for the four-point decision.
The match closed with a win for Ohio State senior heavyweight Corey Morrison as he pinned Purdue freshman Adam Walls in 5:20. Walls got ahead early with a first-period takedown, but Morrison stormed back in the third, taking a 5-2 lead and then pinning Walls quickly in the third.
The Boilermakers continue their run against the Big Ten's elite on Sunday, traveling to No. 5 Minnesota. Tonight's match will air at 11 p.m. (EST) on the Big Ten Network.
