#22 Purdue Wins Three Events During Day One Of Quad

The 22nd-ranked Purdue women's swimming and diving team won three events Friday evening in Madison, Wis., during day one of the Big Ten Quad Duals.

"We had some great races tonight," head coach John Klinge said. "The team really competed well throughout the entire evening."

Junior Allie Smith took the first individual title of the session when she won the 200-yard IM in 2 minutes, 03.76 seconds. Freshman Seraphina Van scored in seventh place in that race with her 2:06.54 clocking, and sophomore Sarah Dunleavy finished in a season-best time of 2:09.53.

Junior Ariel Martin gave Purdue another win by claiming victory in the 100 freestyle with her time of 50.62. Classmate Lisa Butler took third in the event when she stopped the clock in 51.26, and senior Leah Henninger clocked a season-best time of 51.91 to place eighth.

Sophomore Lauren Roth scored the third victory and led a 1-2 Boilermaker finish in the 200 butterfly. The Carrollton, Texas, native beat the field with her 2:02.72 time, and Van finished second after touching the wall in a season-best time of 2:04.08.

Roth also strengthened her provisional-qualifying time in the 500 freestyle and finished second with her time of 4:49.61. Freshman Caitlin Hamilton, who last week broke the program record in the 1,000 freestyle, was the next to touch the wall with her 4:50.36 clocking. Sophomore Amy Gutwein and junior Jessica Skiba recorded season-best times of 5:01.34 and 5:01.67, respectively.

Junior Jessica Davis and freshman Emily McIlrath swam to season-best times in the 100 breaststroke. Davis placed fourth in 1:03.61, and McIlrath immediately followed in 1:04.44. Senior Christina Jacobs added another season-best clocking of 1:05.16 while placing eighth. Sophomore Kristen Gilson claimed third place in the 200 backstroke by stopping the clock in 2:01.75 and was followed in fourth by Smith's 2:02.19 time.

Butler, Martin, Lauren Gustafson and Lauren Nichols swam to a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle when the quartet finished the race in 1:34.46. In the final event of the day, Smith, Davis, Van and Butler finished third in the 400 medley relay with a 3:48.08 time.

Purdue leads Illinois 100-64. No. 10 Minnesota is ahead of the Boilermakers 87-77, and host and 17th-ranked Wisconsin holds a 95-69 lead. The Big Ten Quad Duals conclude Saturday with action beginning from the Natatorium on the University of Wisconsin's campus at 1 p.m. ET.
