LOWELL, Ind. - The 25th-ranked Purdue wrestling team fell to the top-ranked, defending national champion University of Iowa on Sunday at Lowell High School in Lowell, Ind., 41-6. Juniors Colton Salazar and Logan Brown picked up the Boilermakers' two victories on the day, winning at 157 and 197 pounds as Purdue fell to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Duals.
The Hawkeyes blitzed the Boilermakers in the lower weight classes, racing out to a 22-0 lead on two pins, a major decision and a disqualification. Purdue freshman Cashé Quiroga scored the first takedown against fourth-ranked Matt McDonough at 125 pounds, but the Hawkeye freshman, regained control with a takedown of his own and quickly pinned Quiroga at 2:13. Junior Akif Eren went the distance against sixth-ranked Hawkeye senior Daniel Dennis, but still fell by major decision, 16-5. The match at 141 started similarly to 125 as junior Juan Archuleta took down seventh-ranked Iowa sophomore Montell Marion to lead 2-0. Marion came back with a takedown in the first period, and another in the second period before sticking Archuleta at 3:53. Top-ranked Iowa senior Brent Metcalf capped the run at 149, taking a disqualification victory over Boilermaker senior Nick Bertucci due to flagrant misconduct.
Salazar got the Boilermakers on the board at 157 pounds, needing overtime for the 6-4 sudden victory over Iowa's Jake Kerr. He opened the bout with a slick takedown, ducking a shot and almost dumping Kerr to his back, and followed with a wealth of riding time to end the first period, 2-0. Salazar continued to ride Kerr through most of the second, but gave up a reversal late to make it 2-2 heading to the third. A quick escape made it a 3-2 advantage for Salazar, but Kerr hit a big double-leg takedown in the waning seconds to take a 4-3 lead, but the Boilermakers' riding time point forced overtime. Salazar didn't waste much time in the sudden victory period, hitting a shot and working through for the two points and the win.
After an intermission, Iowa regained their momentum as fifth-ranked Ryan Morningstar posted a 10-2 major decision over Purdue senior Jason Martin at 165 pounds, and second-ranked Jay Borschel accepted a forfeit and six team points at 174 pounds to push the lead to 32-3, as sixth-ranked Purdue junior Luke Manuel stayed out of the lineup with a minor injury. No. 9 Phil Keddy notched another major decision at 184 pounds for the Hawkeyes, downing Boilermaker senior Nick Corpe, 11-1.
Brown put the Boilermakers' final points on the board at 197 pounds, again needing overtime for a 3-1 decision over Luke Lofthouse. The pair traded escapes to start the second and third periods, heading to sudden victory tied 1-1, but Brown converted the only takedown in the match halfway into the one-minute overtime to solidify the win.
Iowa's Daniel Erekson made his season-debut at 285 pounds, facing Purdue freshman Adam Walls in the last match of the day, and needed just 1:08 to pin the Boilermaker rookie and end the dual, 41-6.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m., hosting third-ranked Ohio State University in Holloway Gymnasium in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. The match will air via tape-delay on the Big Ten Network.
