The Purdue men's tennis team completed competition at the Wildcat Fall Invitational on Sunday in Evanston, Ill.
Senior P.J. Rose won the Flight A singles title with a 4-0 opening weekend. The Highland, Ill., native began the tournament with a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6) win in the opening round before earning a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) victory in the quarterfinal. In his semifinal match, Rose was victorious by a 7-6, 6-4 score. In the final, Rose again won a three-set match by taking a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4) decision.
Sophomore Thomas Wilson also won his opening match in Flight B singles competition. The San Antonio, Texas, native picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in his first fall match before falling 2-6, 3-6 in the quarterfinal. He then fell 2-6, 5-7 in the consolation bracket but bounced back with a 6-2, 7-5 victory in his final match of the tournament.
Fellow sophomores Matt Manasse and Jan-Frans Engelbrecht also picked up victories in singles play. Manasse, playing in Flight D, picked up a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11) win in the consolation bracket after dropping his first two matches of the weekend. Engelbrecht fell 2-6, 0-6 in his first match in Flight C but bounced back to take a 6-2, 6-0 win before suffering a 6-1, 4-6, 0-1 (8) defeat. Engelbrecht ended his tournament with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) victory.
Rose and Wilson also teamed up in doubles, as did Manasse and Engelbrecht. Rose and Wilson dropped their first match in the A flight, and Manasse and Engelbrecht also were defeated in their opening match of the B flight. Both duos responded with a win in their final doubles match Sunday.
Purdue won all four of its singles matches Sunday, as well as both doubles contests, to put together a perfect 6-0 mark on the tournament's final day.
The Boilermakers are set to host the Purdue Fall Invitational next weekend. Play begins Saturday from the Schwartz Tennis Center.
