WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team split a doubleheader with rival Indiana on Saturday, winning the opener 15-8 and watching a comeback bid in the ninth inning fall just short in a 7-6 loss in the second game. The split leaves Purdue 19-22 overall and 6-10 in the Big Ten and Indiana 22-33 for the year and 11-5 in league games.
Highlighted by a 3 for 3 effort from Eric Charles, the Boilermakers had five players with two or more hits in the front end of the double dip and Kevin Cahill tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn his third win of the season.
Purdue had the go-ahead run on first with two outs in the ninth inning of the second game, but IU ace Eric Arnett struck out Drew Madia to wrap up a complete game on the mound and win his 10th game of the year.
Game One
Capped by a three-run homer by Alex Jaffee, Purdue exploded for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a close contest for a 15-8 win over Indiana in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Boilers rallied from a 5-3 deficit after four and half innings by plating two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh before pulling away with the big inning in the eighth.
Purdue rapped out 15 hits in the contest, including two doubles, a triple and home runs by Jaffee and Brandon Haveman. The Boilers saw seven of the nine starters finish with at least one hit, and five with two or more.
Eric Charles led the way individually, going 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and a game-high three runs scored. John Cummins chipped in with three hits, including his sixth double of the season, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Haveman, who hit the first pitch he saw in the game over the right field fence for his third homer of the year, ended the game 2 for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ben Wolgamot (2 for 5, R), and Dan Black (2 for 2, 2 RBIs, 2 R) each paired hits for Purdue in the win.
On the mound, reliever Kevin Cahill (3-2) allowed just two hits over three shutout innings to pick up his third win of the season. The right-hander struck out one and walked two.
IU's Joey O'Gara (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Offensively, the Hoosiers were led by Vince Gonzalez's three-RBI game. The IU third baseman finished the game 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Game Two
Purdue got the potential game-winning run aboard with two outs in the ninth inning, but IU ace Eric Arentt struck out Drew Madia with runners on first and second to quash the Boilermaker rally and earn a split in the doubleheader.
Brandon Haveman led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right and Dan Black, who became Purdue's single-season walks leader earlier in the contest, was issued a two-out intentional walk to place the go-ahead run aboard and bring Madia to the plate.
The junior DH, who had come through with a two-run game-tying single with two outs in the in the seventh, couldn't replicate his success in the ninth, going down swinging for Arnett's ninth strikeout of the game.
Trailing 6-1 after six and half innings, Madia and the Boilermakers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull even at 6-6, but IU's Jerrud Sabourin hit a two-out solo homer in the top of the eighth to push the Hoosiers back into the lead.
IU's Arnett, who was able to overcome the rough seventh inning and the trouble in the ninth, picked up his team-leading 10th win of the season with a complete game effort on the mound. The right-hander allowed six runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Purdue reliever Joe Haase (1-2) was charged with a tough-luck loss, surrendering the two-out homer to Sabourin in the eighth. The freshman right-hander allowed two runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Purdue and Indiana will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Right-hander Matt Morgan is the scheduled starter for the Boilermakers.
