WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team swept a doubleheader with Iowa on Saturday to move its overall record over the .500 mark for the first time since opening day. The Boilermakers (13-12, 3-2 Big Ten) staved off late Hawkeye rallies in both contests to win 5-3 and 10-9 to take the three-games season series for a second straight year.
Junior Dan Black continued his torrid season, finishing the double dip 4 for 6 with a pair of doubles, his team leading ninth home run of the season, five RBIs and three runs scored. He was also walked four times in the two games, including a pair of intentional free passes.
Other offensive stars on Saturday for Purdue were Eric Charles (6 for 9, 3 R), Brandon Haveman (6 for 10, 2B, 4 R) and Drew Madia (3 for 5, HR, 5 RBIs, R).
On the mound, starters Matt Jansen (3-3) and Matt Morgan (2-2) each earned victories, while Kevin Cahill and Jeff Straub recorded their third and first save of the season, respectively.
Game 1
Purdue opened the front end of Saturday's doubleheader with a 5-3 win over visiting Iowa. The Boilers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through four innings, and then road the arms of Matt Jansen and Kevin Cahill to the two-run victory.
Purdue struck first in third, plating two runs on a Dan Black double to right center, and added two more in the fourth on an Alex Jaffee homer and Black's second run-scoring two-bagger of the game. Jaffee's solo homer to left was his first of the season.
After Iowa cut the advantaged in half by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth on Ryan Durant triple and a Purdue fielding miscue, the Boilers responded with a lone run home half of the frame on a bases loaded walk to Drew Madia to make it 5-2 Purdue.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the top of the ninth, plating a run on an infield single by Kurtis Muller and placing the tying runs and second and third with two outs, but closer Kevin Chaill got Wes Freie to ground out to third to end the threat and the game.
Purdue starter Jansen, who improved to 3-3 on the year, allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits in six solid innings of work. He struck out four and walked five before giving way to Cahill in the seventh.
Cahill allowed the single run in the ninth, but settled down to record his team-best third save of the season over three innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked one.
Black lead all players at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Eric Charles chipped in with a 3 for 4-day at the plate and Jaffee and Brandon Haveman each scored a pair of runs.
Iowa's Jarred Hippen (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing all five runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.
Game 2
The Boilermakers withstood a furious Hawkeye rally over the final two innings in the back of the doubleheader to narrowly pull off the sweep. Leading 10-2 through seven complete, Iowa scored six runs in the eighth, one in the ninth and had the tying run aboard at first when the final out was recorded.
Powered by a Drew Madia three-run homer, the Boilermakers added to a 1-0 lead with five runs in the third inning to jump to a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Purdue tacked on three more runs in the fourth to add to the edge and appeared to be on its way to coasting to victory behind starter Matt Morgan.
The Boilermaker right-hander held Iowa scoreless on just two hits over the first five innings, including retiring 10 straight Hawkeye hitters from the second through the fifth, before finally allowing two runs in the top of the sixth.
Morgan hung a zero in the seventh, but ran out of gas in the eighth to help pave the way for the Iowa comeback.
The Hawkeyes plated six runs in the eighth frame on six hits, two Purdue errors, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to trim the the Boilermakers' lead to 10-8.
Wes Freie came up with the big hit in the inning, rapping a three-run double to right center to help force Morgan from the game.
Left-handed reliever Blake Mascarello entered and allowed three more runs to score on a single by Andrew Ewing, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Nick Brown before giving way to right-hander Jeff Straub.
The sophomore finally recorded the final out in the eighth, but had to work his way out of a jam in the ninth to wrap up the win and nail down his first career save.
The Hawkeyes pulled within one in the final frame on a two-out fielding error by Madia and had the tying run on first, but Straub got Ewing to fly out shallow right field to end the game in Purdue's favor.
Morgan (2-2) picked up his second win of the year, allowing five earned runs on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out 10 and did not issue a walk. Iowa starter Freie (2-3) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work.
Madia led all players at the plate, going 3 for 4 with his third home run of year, four RBIs and a run scored. Eric Charles chipped in with a 3 for 5, two-run effort and Black added to an impressive day by finishing 2 for 3 with his team-leading ninth home run of the year, a solo shot in the first, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Tyler Spillner added pair of hits and two runs driven in and Jonathan Lilly finished 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
Purdue will return to nonconference action Tuesday when it hosts Ball State for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
