The Purdue women's tennis team ended a five-match losing streak Saturday by defeating the 70th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers 6-1 inside the Neilsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
"I thought it was a whole team effort today," head coach Laura Glitz said. "Starting with the doubles and continuing all the way down the singles lineup, we competed hard and our energy level was extremely high. I was pleased with the effort level all around."
Purdue (6-9, 2-3) jumped out to an early advantage by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Senior co-captain Stephanie Wooten and junior Michelle Sammons improved to 10-5 this season by defeating Elizabeth Carpenter and Aleksandra Markovic 8-4 at No. 1. Purdue's freshman duo of Jennifer Rabot and Remi Martin, playing together for the first time since March 13, moved to 6-6 in 2009 with a 9-7 victory over Katya Mirnova and Emese Kardhordo 9-7 at No. 2. At the No. 3 position, Jessica Seyferth and Angela Chupa defeated junior co-captain Tatiana Ganzha and freshman Kay Kay Magi, who made her first doubles appearance this season, 9-7.
Wisconsin (5-13, 0-6) earned its only singles victory at No. 1, where Carpenter beat Sammons 7-6 (3), 6-0. The Boilermakers claimed the other five singles matches to take the dominating win. Wooten won her second match in a row and improved to 9-5 in 2009 with her 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Mirnova at No. 2. Rabot earned her 12th singles victory, against just three losses, and her third in a row by defeating Markovic 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Rabot also improved to 2-0 while playing at the No. 3 position.
Ganzha stopped a losing streak that had reached three matches and moved to 8-7 this season by taking down Seyferth 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 4. Freshman Anna Dushkina also improved to 8-7 in the spring when Chupa retired following the second set. Dushkina won the first set 6-1 and dropped the second 4-6 before the match was stopped. Martin picked up her first three-set victory in 2009 by defeating Dana Larsen 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Boilermakers earned their fourth win this season by the 6-1 margin. Purdue returns to action Sunday by traveling to top-ranked Northwestern. Live results from the match, which starts at noon ET, can be found at purduesports.com.
