Final Stats

MUNCIE, Ind. - Purdue's Nick Overmyer went 5 for 5 with six RBIs and three runs scored to account for nine of the Boilermakers' 14 runs at Ball State on Tuesday. The Boilers' 14-6 win in a rain-shortened eight innings over the Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak and improved them 18-21 for the year. Ball State, which defeated Purdue 17-8 in West Lafayette earlier this season, dropped to 19-19 with the loss.

The Boilermakers opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs on four hits, including an RBI single by Overmyer and a two-run double off the bat of senior Brandon Haveman. Ball State's T.J. Baumet answered with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the advantage to 3-2.

Overmyer accounted for two Purdue runs and a Cardinal score in the third, plating two runs for his team in the top of the inning and committing a run-scoring throwing error in the bottom of the frame to leave the contest 5-3 in Purdue's favor.

The junior shortstop added an RBI single in the fifth, a run-scoring double in the seventh and plated another run in Purdue's game-breaking five-run eighth inning to wrap up just the second five-hit game of the year the Boilers.

As a team, Purdue rapped out 17 hits in the contest, including a 3 for 6, three-RBI day by Haveman and a two-hit, two-RBI game by David Blount.

Right-hander Drew Wurdack turned in a third consecutive outstanding midweek start to pick up his third win of the year. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Reliever Kevin Cahill picked up his fifth save of the year, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Ball State starter Adam Quinn (2-3) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in three innings of work.

Purdue will return to Big Ten action this weekend when it hosts rival Indiana for a three-game series at Lambert Field. First pitch for the opener on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
