SAN MARCOS, Texas - Purdue rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome two errors and 11 walks, as Texas State completed a three-game sweep of the Boilermakers with a 14-10 win on Sunday.
Purdue dropped to 2-7 with its thrid straight loss, while Texas State improved to 9-3 with its sixth win in its last seven games played.
Texas State jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings on three-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt in the first and sacrifice bunt by Bret Atwood in the second.
Purdue plated a pair of runs in the top of the third on an RBI single by Tyler Spillner and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Lilly to cut the Bobcat lead in half, but Goldschimdt answered with his fourth home run of the weekend, a two-run shot to right-center, to push the TSU lead back to four at 6-2. Goldschmidt finished the weekend with 12 RBIs against the Purdue pitching staff.
After Texas State pushed the advantage to 9-2 with three runs in the fourth, the Boilers rallied with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it a three-run deficit at 9-6. Dan Black hit his first of two homers in the fifth, and Spillner chipped in with two-run single in the sixth to chip away at the Bobcat lead.
Texas State answered Purdue's mid-game rally by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring singles by Jordan Kopycinski and Tyler Sibley and a wild pitch by Kevin Cahill for a 12-6 edge, and tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 14-6 lead.
The Boilers made things interesting in the ninth, as Black went deep for the second time in the game, this one a three-run blast, and Jonathan Moore singled in another to make it 14-10, but Purdue ran out of outs and the Bobcats held on the series-sweeping win.
Texas State starter Brian Borski (3-0) picked up his third win of the season, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings of work. He struck out two and walked four. Purdue starter Matt Bischoff (0-1) was charged with his first loss of the season after surrendering six runs, five earned on eight hits over three innings.
Black's two homers, his third and fourth of the season, highlighted a 13-hit day for the Boilermakers. Freshman Spillner added three hits and three RBIs, while Lilly, Drew Madia and Moore added two hits apiece for Purdue in the loss.
The Boilermakers will return to action on Wednesday when they take on Butler. First pitched is scheduled for 3 p.m.
