SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State rapped out 14 hits, including three homers, two doubles and two triples, in a 17-4 win over Purdue in game two of a three-game series on Saturday. The Boilers second straight defeat to the Bobcats dropped them to 2-6 for the season, while TSU improved to 8-3 with the series-clinching win.
Texas State, which plated a single run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead, broke the game open by scoring seven runs on six hits in the third inning to race out to an 8-0 edge. The Bobcats scored all of their runs in the frame after the first two outs had been recorded, getting a two-run triple by Jason Martinson and a two-run double Laurn Randell.
Texas State added another run in the fourth on a solo homer by Paul Goldschmidt, and tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run blast by Goldschmidt to make it 12-0.
Purdue cut into the TSU lead by scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh, getting an RBI double by Jonathan Moore, a sacrifice fly by Tyler Spillner and a run-scoring single by John Cummins, but the Bobcats answered right back with four runs in the home half of the seventh to push the advantage back to 12 runs at 16-4.
A solo homer by Randell in the bottom of the eighth capped off the scoring for Texas State on the day.
Bobcat starter Kane Holbrooks (3-0) picked up his third win of the season after tossing six shutout innings. The right-hander limited Purdue to six hits, while striking out three and walking two.
Purdue starter Matt Jansen (1-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering eight runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Highlighted by Goldschmidt's two homers and four RBIs, eight of nine Texas State starters had at least one hit in the contest and all nine scored at least one run.
Dan Black finished the afternoon 3 for 4 with a double to pace the Boilermaker offense. Cummings finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and David Blount came off the becn to go 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Purdue and Texas State will meet up for the three-game series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast live on the Interntet.
