MARTIN, Tenn. - The Purdue baseball team rapped out 14 hits, including five doubles and another Dan Black home run, in a 10-3 win over SIU Edwardsville on Saturday. The victory, Purdue's third straight, improved the Boilermakers to 8-9 for the year, while the Cougars dropped to 2-11.
Purdue plated five runs on six hits in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. After Brandon Haveman led off the game with a double, the Boilers got an RBI ground by Jonathan Lilly, a run-scoring double by Ryan Bridges, an RBI double by Jonathan Moore and a two-run single by Eric Charles.
Purdue tacked on a single run in the fifth on a Charles double, and broke the game open in the eighth when Black connected on a three-run homer, his eighth blast of the season and his fourth in his last three games.
SIU managed to scrape together just single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth off of three Purdue pitchers.
Starter Matt Jansen (1-2) picked up his first win of the season, tossing six solid innings. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits and finished with five strikeouts and two walks.
SIUE starter Andrew Beatty was charged with his second loss of the year after giving up six runs on 10 hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked six.
Offensively, eight of the nine Purdue starters in the game finished with at least one hit. Moore led the charge finishing 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Charles and Black each paired hits in the victory and finished with three RBIs apiece.
Purdue will return to action Tuesday when plays at home for the first time this season against IPFW.
