The 68th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team was defeated 6-1 Thursday by No. 25 San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

"I thought we competed hard and played with a lot of energy," head coach Laura Glitz said. "Even though we did not come away with a win over spring break, I believe this trip prepared us for our next match against Indiana, as well as the rest of our Big Ten season."

Purdue (5-8) lost the doubles point for the second time with its new outdoor doubles lineup. Emma Cioffi and Esther Cadua defeated the freshman duo of Anna Dushkina and Jennifer Rabot 8-3 at No. 3. San Diego State (10-3) clinched the point at No. 2 when Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison beat junior co-captain Tatiana Ganzha and freshman Remi Martin 8-3. The Boilermakers picked up a win at No. 1 as senior co-captain Stephanie Wooten and junior Michelle Sammons won 8-5 over the 40th-ranked duo of Julia Trunk and Holly Bagshaw.

Rabot improved her singles record to 10-3 in her first season as a Boilermaker by defeating Cadua 6-2, 7-6 (2) at the No. 4 position. Milana Yusupov defeated Dushkina 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6. In a battle between No. 1 singles players, Trunk took down Sammons 6-4, 6-2.

The Aztecs went on to win the other three singles matches as well. Cioffi defeated Ganzha 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and Bagshaw beat Wooten 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 2. In the only match to need three sets to decide a winner, Olivia Colman outlasted Martin at No. 5 by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 score.

San Diego State now leads the all-time series 5-2 after avenging a 4-3 loss the last time the two teams met in 2004. The Boilermakers return to action March 28 when they host No. 34 Indiana at noon on the Basham Courts inside the Schwartz Tennis Center.
