IOWA CITY, Iowa - The 25th-ranked Purdue wrestling team ran into a buzz saw on Friday night in the form of the top-ranked University of Iowa, suffering a 38-0 loss in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Boilermakers managed just two takedowns in the match, falling to 11-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference duals, while Iowa remained perfect at 21-0 (5-0 Big Ten).

The Boilermakers were unable to provide much resistance to the Hawkeyes' loaded top-half of the line up as Iowa posted bonus-point victories in the first five matches. No. 4 junior Charlie Falck scored a 19-9 major decision over Boilermaker freshman Matt Fields at 125 pounds, and Iowa's top-ranked Daniel Dennis scored a 20-3 technical fall over Purdue rookie Carson Beebe at 133 pounds. No. 2 senior Alex Tsirtsis notched a second straight technical fall at 141 pounds, topping Purdue sophomore Matt Hemry, 17-1. Eighth-ranked Purdue senior Jake Patacsil squared off with undefeated, top-ranked junior Brent Metcalf at 149 pounds, but couldn't come up with much as Metcalf finished with a 14-4 major decision.

The matches got closer at 157 and 165 pounds, but ended similarly as Boilermaker sophomore Colton Salazar dropped a 6-2 decision to Iowa sophomore Matt Ballweg at 157, and No. 16 Purdue sophomore Luke Manuel suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 3 junior Ryan Morningstar at 165. The Hawkeye run continued at 174 and 184 pounds as fourth-ranked Iowa junior Jay Borschel took down Purdue junior Nick Corpe by major decision, 15-3, at 174, and third-ranked junior Phillip Keddy knocked off Boilermaker junior Jason Martin by major decision at 184, 14-4.

Action was tight in the 197 pound matchup between No. 13 Purdue sophomore Logan Brown and 18th-ranked Iowa junior Chad Beatty. The pair ended the first period in a 0-0 stalemate before trading quick escapes to start the second and third frames. A minute of scoreless action followed in a sudden-victory period, pushing the match into a pair of tie-break frames. Brown started on bottom and was ridden out by Beatty for the full 30 seconds. Brown quickly cut Beatty in the second half, giving up the escape point, and was unable to take the Hawkeye down resulting in a 2-1 loss.

Iowa capped the match with a 5-2 heavyweight victory by freshman Jordan Johnson over Purdue junior Chris Kasten. The pair traded escapes in the first six minutes of action, but a pair of late takedowns pushed Johnson past Kasten and sealed the match.

Purdue returns to action in pursuit of their first conference win of the season on Sunday at No. 18 Wisconsin. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (CST) and live results will be available via the NWCA College Scorebook online.
