WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated Toledo 7-0 by winning all nine individual matches Sunday on the Basham Courts inside the Schwartz Tennis Center.
"I thought it was a very good weekend," head coach Laura Glitz said. "Overall, we had great energy, fight and play. These are the things we have been talking about in practice all week, so I was pleased to see the team implement them in the matches."
Purdue (3-2) swept the doubles point for the second consecutive day and remained undefeated when winning the point this season. The freshman duo of Remi Martin and Jennifer Rabot made quick work of Martina Wodzinski and Jenny Belsky, winning 8-2 at the No. 2 position. Purdue's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior co-captain Stephanie Wooten and junior Michelle Sammons clinched the point by beating Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva 8-5. Junior co-captain Tatiana Ganzha and freshman Anna Dushkina completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory over Jessica Azoulay and Melissa Reynolds at No. 3.
Rabot pushed Purdue's lead to 2-0 by dominating Belsky at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0 and pushed her singles record to 4-1 this season. Ganzha grabbed her second singles victory in as many days with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zoubareva at No. 3. Dushkina improved her singles record to 4-1 and clinched the match for Purdue for the second straight day with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Reynolds at No. 6.
Martin was the next Boilermaker to finish and pushed the Purdue lead to 5-0 with her first win of the season, a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Azoulay at No. 5. Sammons earned her second win this weekend by taking down Frey 6-4, 6-0. The final margin was reached when Wooten defeated Wodzinski 7-6 (3), 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
"Everybody really came out pumped up and ready to win," Martin said. "The whole team played really well and fought hard. Everybody was focused and got the job done."
Purdue, which recorded its first 7-0 win since last season's opening match against Middle Tennessee State, now leads the all-time series with Toledo 3-0. The Boilermakers only dropped one individual matchup this weekend, as they also swept the doubles matches in Saturday's 6-1 victory over Maryland.
Purdue returns to action Friday as the Boilermakers travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan. The match, which is slated for a 1 p.m. ET start, begins a stretch of four straight competitions away from home for the Boilermakers after Purdue began 2009 with five straight home matches.
