Purdue Swimmers Cap Florida Trip With Victories

The Purdue men's and women's swimming and diving teams ended their training in south Florida with victories Saturday.

The women's team earned 107 points, while Iowa finished with 67, Florida Atlantic scored 51 and Florida International scored two. The men's team scored 95 points to better Iowa's 92 and Florida Atlantic's 37. The swimming events were held at Miami Shores Aquatic Center, while the diving competitions were contested at FAU Field on Florida Atlantic's Boca Raton campus.

"All in all, I think the women did a really nice job considering it was the 12th straight day of training hard," women's head coach John Klinge said. "We were pleased with the effort and the attitude, and we are looking forward to getting back to school. We have a few big meets coming up in January."

The Purdue women won six races in the pool, and Emily Wetzel added another victory off the 1-meter diving board. Purdue's 200 medley relay quartet of Allie Smith, Jessica Davis, Lisa Butler and Ariel Martin won with a time of 1:46.86, and the 200 freestyle relay of Butler, Katie Beck, Leah Henninger and Lauren Roth touched the wall first in 1:37.42.

Henninger and Roth gave the Boilermakers the top-two finishes in the 200 freestyle as Henninger won the race in 1:52.52 and Roth finished in 1:53.63. Butler and Martin claimed the first two finishes in the 50 freestyle, with Butler touching the wall in 24.22 and Martin finishing in 24.30. Smith claimed top honors in the 100 backstroke in 57.26, and Roth won the 500 freestyle in 5:02.69. Wetzel recorded a season-best score of 280.12 to lead all divers in the 1-meter competition.

Kristen Gilson and Amy Gutwein finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,000 freestyle with season-best times of 10:24.30 and 10:25.53. That race also included season-best times of 10:30.96 from Jessica Skiba and 10:37.90 from Elyse Dudar. Smith finished second in the 200 IM, Gilson was fourth and Sarah Dunleavy was fifth. Beck placed second in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.63, and Christine Inman finished the race in 58.20 to take third.

Henninger finished second in the 100 freestyle in 52.66, and Martin and Jenna York placed third and fifth, respectively. Gutwein was fourth in the 500 freestyle and Skiba finished fifth. Christina Jacobs finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.22. Casey Matthews finished second in the 1-meter competition with her score of 269.47, and Kara Cook's score of 230.25 placed fourth. Wetzel finished second off the 3-meter board with 238.87 points, while Matthews scored 235.12 for third and Cook claimed fifth with 219.67.

The Purdue men's team won four races in the pool, with David Boudia adding victories in the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions.

"It's the end of two weeks of hard training," men's head coach Dan Ross said. "We've been going non stop since December 26th without any time off. The guys are really tired, but they really competed well. I was extremely pleased with the effort, and we are ready for true Big Ten competition."

Purdue's 200 medley relay team of Chris Pfaff, Albert Miller, Kyle House and Daniel Jung won its race in 1:34.89. Matt Stewart touched the wall first in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:27.55, and Jimmy Brooks led a Boilermaker sweep of the top-three positions in the 100 butterfly with his time of 51.12. Aaron Koger won the 100 breaststroke in 55.51. Boudia, the school record holder in both springboard competitions, compiled a score of 354.22 to pace the field in the 1-meter event and scored 470.47 to win the 3-meter.

Drew Wolfred finished second in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:31.69, and team captain John Schmitt claimed runner-up honors in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.12. Ben Wachtel just missed a season-best time in the 50 freestyle as he finished second in 21.75. Sam Wilcher finished second in the 100 butterfly in 51.22, and Brendan Joyce was third in 51.28.

Jung was second in the 100 freestyle after touching the wall in 46.77. Kyle Mitrione finished second in both diving competitions after scoring 301.95 off the 1-meter board and 265.95 off the 3-meter board. Andre Koop was third in the 100 backstroke with his time of 53.24, and Wyatt Hodges finished third in the 100 breaststroke in 58.44. Purdue's 200 freestyle relay team of Andrew Langenfeld, Tim Watts, Barry and Jung touched the wall second in 1:24.94.

Luke Zehrung finished fourth in the 100 freestyle in 48.07, and Albert Miller claimed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with his time of 58.90. Schmitt, Koop and Wilcher finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. Gage Barry finished fifth in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:45.09, and Kyle House placed fifth in the 100 butterfly in 52.26.

The Purdue swimming and diving teams return to action next Saturday at Michigan State.
