Purdue Invitational: Day Two Results
Nov. 8, 2008
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team had another solid day at their own invitational on Saturday. The Boilermakers took on Louisville and won one doubles match and five singles matches.
"I didn't think we were very energetic in our doubles, but our singles was great," head coach Laura Glitz said. "Louisville is a good team. For us to win five out of six singles was really big. I thought we played well and competed well. The girls really fought hard."
Stephanie Wooten and Michelle Sammons notched the lone doubles victory with an 8-3 win over Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez. The duo has won both matches they played this weekend and improved their fall record to 6-1.
Remi Martin got things started in singles action with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Gabi Duncan. Wooten was next off with a similarly overwhelming victory over Gorbea, 6-2, 6-0.
Tatiana Ganzha and Joanna Craven also won in straight sets. Ganzha defeated Baez, 6-4, 6-3 and Craven took out Lindsey Jones, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
The story of the day might have been Jennifer Rabot. The freshman struggled to get going in her first set, falling 1-6. She came dug deep in the last two sets, however, and won two tiebreakers, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (3).
"I think we just need to keep doing the same thing. I just want to see intensity from warm-ups throughout the whole match. They're doing a really good job of fighting on the court and you can see the results," Glitz said.
The Purdue Invitational continues tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center with Cornell, Tulane, Michigan State and Louisville hitting the courts. Purdue competes against Miami (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m.
