Big Ten Singles Championship: Day Three Results
Nov. 2, 2008
MADISON, Wis. - Junior Slavko Bijelica is representing the Purdue men's tennis team very well this weekend, advancing all the way to the Big Ten Singles Championship semifinals. His two wins today put him in the tournament's final four.
"I've really been impressed with Slavko's preparation," head coach Tim Madden said. "He's consistenly preparing himself both mentally and physically for these tournaments. He did the same thing at the ITA Regionals."
Bijelica won his Round of 16 match this morning, defeating Peter Aarts (Michigan), 6-2, 7-6. He went on to edge out top seeded Tobias Wernet (Minnesota) in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-4.
"Slavko is competing at his highest level right now. He still isn't playing his best tennis but when he needs to, it's there for him. He's coming up with big serves and big ground strokes when he needs them," Madden said.
Bijelica is slated to take on Christian Bierich (Iowa) tomorrow morning in the semis. Both the semifinals and finals will air on the Big Ten Network next Sunday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. ET.
The Boilermakers also had seven players competing in the consolation bracket today, with senior P.J. Rose winning two matches and senior Griff Nienberg and sophomore Eric Ramos each winning one. Each has been eliminated.
