Records Fall As Boilermakers Cruise

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue swimming and diving teams got their season started off right on Saturday, defeating Ball State, Indianapolis and IUPUI at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Freshman David Boudia led the men's diving effort, setting a Purdue varsity record along the way. His score of 399.40 in 1-meter smashed the previous mark of 377.45 held by Zach Schultz (2007). Boudia also won the 3-meter event, scoring a 370.00.

Sophomore David Colturi finished second in 3-meter with a score of 360.15, while junior Kyle Mitrione finished third at 320.20. They flipped positions in 1-meter, with Mitrione in second at 359.25 and Colturi in third at 329.00.

The women divers were on point today, as well. Junior Ashley Karnes led the women by scoring a 297.80 in 1-meter and 363.50 in 3-meter. Her 3-meter score was good for a pool record, previously held by Carrie McCambridge (361.05, 2006).

Freshmen Ashley Beal and Casey Matthews also scored well. Beal picked up second in 3-meter at 309.05 and third in 1-meter at 270.60. Matthews finished second in 1-meter with a score of 273.45 and third in 3-meter at 297.80.

Sophomore Katie Beck was one of the leaders in the pool for the women, posting the fastest time in the 100 back at 58.47. She was also part of a 200 medley relay team, along with freshman Christina Jacobs, junior Christine Inman and sophomore Ariel Martin, which swam a meet-best 1:47.63.

Freshman Lauren Roth swam well in the freestyle events, winning the 200 in 1:52.22 and the 500 in 4:58.63. Martin was also solid in freestyle, taking the 50 in 23.61.

On the men's side, senior Tim Watts, junior Aaron Koger, freshman Kyle House and senior Andrew Langenfeld won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:31.81. Watts came back strong in the 100 back, taking the event in 51.19. Koger also won the 100 breast with a time of 56.20.

Senior John Schmitt was a solid performer for Purdue, as well, winning the 200 free in 1:40.28 and taking the 200 free relay with fellow seniors Ben Roscoe, Luke Zehrung and Mike Hedge in 1:26.18.

The Boilermaker men blew away the competition, scoring a 887.50. Ball State finished second at 386.50, Indianapolis was third at 341.50 and IUPUI was fourth at 132.50.

The race on the women's side was a little closer, but with the same result. Purdue finished on top at 718, with Ball State in second at 647, Indianapolis in third at 308 and IUPUI in fourth at 143.

The Purdue women's swimming and diving teams are back in action next Thursday when they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami (Ohio) and Louisville. Both the men and women will be back in the Boilermaker Aquatic Center next Friday for the Alumni/Intrasquad Meet.
