Oct. 14, 2008
Flushing, N.Y. - The Purdue women's tennis team had some strong showings last weekend at the Women's College Invitational, but none were stronger than the display put on by a couple of newcomers.
Freshmen Anya Dushkina and Jennifer Rabot were the story of the weekend for the Boilermakers. The duo swept all four matches they played in to win the Doubles III Flight. No other pair threatened, either, as Dushkina and Rabot shut down their opponents 8-3, 8-2, 8-5, 8-4.
The doubles tandem of freshman Remi Martin and senior Stephanie Wooten also proved to be effective, racking up a 2-1 record in the Doubles II Flight. They beat Casey Herzberg and Sara Mansur (Brown) 8-5 and Leonora Slatnick and Amy Zhang (Rutgers) 8-3.
Redshirt junior Tatiana Ganzha advanced all the way to the finals of the Singles V Flight. She went 3-1 on the weekend, including two three-set wins in her first two matches. She beat Alley Majercik (Iowa) 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 in the Round of 16 and the No. 1 seeded Daria Petrovic (N.C. State) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinal.
Dushkina also performed well in singles play, posting a 3-1 record and advancing to the finals of the Singles VII Flight. She dominated her first two matches, defeating Amy Hosotsuji (Long Island) 6-2, 6-0 in the Round of 16 and Robbie Verano (Army) 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinal.
Two other Boilermakers chalked up 2-1 records over the weekend. Sophomore Joanna Craven competed in the Singles II Flight and posted a 2-1 record. She beat Lauren Sadaka (Penn) 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 16 and Sinziana Chis (Cornell) 6-1, 6-3 in the consolation.
Martin went 2-1 in the Singles VI Flight. She steamrolled Christina Amo (Texas A&M) 6-2, 6-1 and Nina Suda (Columbia) 6-2, 6-1.
