WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team won eight singles matches and three doubles matches during the first day of their fall invitational yesterday in West Lafayette.

Junior Paul Foley was one of two Boilermakers to win two singles matches on the day. In the Singles C Flight, he won his first match 6-3, 6-1 over Stephen McLoughlin (Butler) and his second match 7-5, 6-2 over Tom Mroziewicz (Iowa).

Freshman Thomas Wilson was the other Purdue player to take two singles matches. He won his first round match in the Singles D Flight 7-5, 7-5 over J.T. Christian (Marquette) and took a hard fought three-setter in the bracket semifinals 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Matt Nelson (Iowa).

Both Foley and Wilson will play in their bracket finals today.

In other action, junior Slavko Bijelica defeated Greg Holm (Iowa) 6-2, 6-2 in the Singles A Flight. Sophomore Eric Ramos is in the A Flight consolation final after taking his second match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Ben Raynauld (Butler).

In Singles B Flight matches, senior P.J. Rose edged out Mark Rutherford (Marquette) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in his first match before bowing out of the draw due to injury. Senior Griff Nienberg is in the B Flight consolation final after beating Patrick Dwyer (Iowa) 7-6 (2), 5-7, 7-6 (3).

The Boilermakers won all three doubles matches they played In Saturday. Ramos and Rose shut down McLoughlin and Zach Ervin (Butler) 8-1.

Nienberg and Wilson and Bijelica and sophomore Matt Manasse both won matches that went into tiebreakers. Nienberg and Wilson edged out Holm and Reinoud Haal (Iowa) 9-8 (5) and Bijelica and Manasse outlasted Christian and Jonathan Schwerin (Marquette) 9-8 (3).

The final day of competition at the Purdue Fall Invitational is today at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Check purduesports.com for more updates.
