KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Purdue women's tennis team kick-started their 2008 fall schedule with some solid performances at the Western Michigan Invitational. Each singles player scored at least one victory today and two players won twice.
Sophomore Joanna Craven defeated Miriam Westerink (Eastern Michigan) 6-4, 6-4 and Paola Calderon (Marquette) 6-2, 6-3. She competed in the black flight, along with Purdue redshirt senior Stephanie Wooten and junior Michelle Sammons. Wooten picked up a win over Veronica Cardenas (West Virginia) 6-0, 6-1 and Sammons beat Rachael Hush (Marquette) 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman Anya Dushkina notched two wins in the gold flight, defeating Mariya Kovaleva (Illinois-Chicago) 6-1, 6-2 and Yumi Matsuto (Western Michigan) 6-3, 6-2. Also competing in the gold flight were redshirt freshmen Jennifer Rabot and Remi Martin. Rabot defeated Joanna Woo (Eastern Michigan) 6-3, 6-3 and Martin took out Olga Elkin (West Virginia) 6-1, 6-1.
In the brown flight, redshirt junior Tatiana Ganzha beat Amy Jellish (Illinois-Chicago) 6-4, 6-0 and freshman Kay Kay Magi beat Milica Pantovic (West Virginia) 6-3, 6-3.
The teams of Sammons and Rabot and Martin and Craven each tallied victories in doubles action. Sammons and Rabot got their win by beating Elkin and Cardenas (West Virginia) 8-4. Martin and Craven defeated LaFortune and Burton (West Virginia) 8-2.
