WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's women's tennis team improved to 2-3 in the Big Ten Conference and 4-11 overall following its 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Penn State's Sarni Tenni Center. The Nittany Lions fell to 7-9 and 1-4 in the Big Ten.
The Boilermakers, winners of their last two conference matches, had not defeated Penn State since 1994.
"It was a good performance overall and it's always great to get the win," said head coach Laura Glitz. "We knew coming in Penn State was going to be tough since they had just beat Wisconsin as well."
Purdue followed the same pattern it used to defeat the Badgers last Sunday, winning the doubles point at 1 and 2, and claiming singles matches at 1, 2 and 4.
Both Purdue doubles teams came back from early 4-1 deficits. Stephanie Wooten and Brooke Beier took the match at No. 1 over Jenny Schuler and Sarah Lotto, 8-5, and Cigdem Duru and Joanna Craven dispatched Leyla Morzan and Lauren McCarthy at the No. 2 spot, 9-7.
According to Glitz, with the No. 2 doubles match tied at 7-all and the Boilermakers down Love-40, Craven nailed five first serves to retake a lead they would not relinquish.
Purdue clinched the match before its No. 5 and 6 singles players took the courts since Penn State's indoor facility can only play host to four matches at once.
At No. 1, Beier beat Katelyn BeVard in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, and Wooten followed at No. 2 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Shular.
Craven topped Dorothy Dohanics at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
"We came out a little flat in doubles but picked it up toward the end," said Glitz. "Singles was very good from the start and we had the match won even before the five and six went out there."
Purdue's road trip continues Sunday with an 11 a.m. match at Michigan.
