Conference Foes Tackle Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 1 Northwestern (16-1, 4-0 Big Ten) defeated Purdue (2-10, 0-3 Big Ten) Saturday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

The Wildcats won all three doubles matches by scores of 8-3, 8-3 and 8-1, and posted five straight-set victories in singles.

Senior Cigdem Duru at No. 3 singles was the only Boilermaker to send her match to a third set. Duru won the first set over No. 25 Sam Murray, 6-2, but lost the next two sets, 6-2 and 10-5.

The Boilermakers return to their home court again Sunday at 11 a.m., playing host to Wisconsin (7-9, 0-4 Big Ten). The Badgers lost 6-1 at No. 70 Illinois Saturday.

Free pizza courtesy of the Purdue women's tennis coaching staff will be served during the doubles and singles break. Admission is also free to all Schwartz Tennis Center home matches.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 66 Purdue men's tennis team (7-8, 1-2 Big Ten) dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 45 Wisconsin (11-7. 3-1 Big Ten) Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Head coach Tim Madden deployed three new doubles combinations, but only the No. 2 duo of Slavko Bijelica and Griff Nienberg left the court with a victory. They defeated Luke Rassow-Kantor and Michael Dierberger, 8-6.

Branko Kuzmanovic and P.J. Rose lost at No. 1, 8-4, and Paul Foley and Eric Ramos fell at No. 3, 8-2.

Ramos earned the Boilermakers' lone point, defeating Felipe Bellido at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2,

P.J. Rose and Griff Nienberg both forced a third set at their respecitve positions. Rose fell to Marek Michalicka at No. 3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, and Nienberg was beaten by Jeremy Sonkin, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4.

"This was a lot different from our last 6-1 loss, in that we received a god competitve effort from everyone on the court," Madden said.

The Boilermakers play at Northwestern (7-10, 0-4 Big Ten) Sunday at 11 a.m. CDT. Purdue returns home to the Schwartz Tennis Center Saturday April 5 vs. Michigan.
