WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - FahKara Malone's career-high 23 points and Danielle Campbell's 18 points and 11 rebounds led Purdue to its fourth-straight win, and likely its biggest of the season, in a 68-67 victory over No. 19 Ohio State Thursday night.
With the victory, Purdue took sole possession of first place in the Big Ten and improves its record to 13-10 overall and 9-3 in Big Ten play. Ohio State, which has lost two straight, falls to 17-6 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
With Purdue down 67-66, junior Lakisha Freeman drove the lane and made a running right-handed layup with 19 seconds remaining. On the Buckeyes' next possession, Purdue forced a double team and a bad pass, which was stolen by Kalika France to seal the win.
Early on, Purdue had no answer for Ohio State freshman Jantel Lavender, who had 18 points in the first 20 minutes, and the Boilermakers found themselves down by as many as 14 points in the first half. However, a 12-0 run brought Purdue to within two at 27-25. Malone kept Purdue in the game in the first half, scoring 17 points on 7 of 8 from the floor and the Boilermakers trailed by only four, 40-36, at the break.
After scoring only six points in the first half, Campbell led Purdue the rest of the way by scoring 12 points after halftime. And despite hitting only two shots in the second half, Malone made them both count. Her two 3s each gave Purdue the lead at different junctures in the second half, which saw seven lead changes.
Lavender scored a career-high 30 points, which was the most by any Purdue opponent this season, for Ohio State.
