WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team suffered a 35-6 Big Ten Dual loss to visiting seventh-ranked Ohio State University (OSU) on Sunday. The Boilermakers fell to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten competition, while OSU improved to 16-3 (4-1 Big Ten).
The Boilermakers earned their only victories of the day at 174 and 197 pounds as junior Nick Corpe picked up his team-best 21st win of the season, while freshman Logan Brown moved to 19-8 on the year and 2-1 in conference duals. Corpe edged out OSU's Tommy Priestly for a 2-1 decision as Corpe was the aggressor the entire match and Priestly suffered multiple stalling calls for his passive efforts. Brown outmuscled Buckeye rookie John Weakley for a 6-4 win, scoring takedowns in the first and second period to push the effort.
OSU wasted no time in taking control of the match, scoring pins in the first two matches at 285 and 125 pounds. Second-ranked J.D. Bergman pinned Purdue sophomore Chris Kasten in 1:45, and freshman Nikko Triggas stuck Purdue freshman Akif Eren just under a minute into the second period at 3:55.
Fourteenth-ranked Buckeye sophomore Reece Humphrey squeaked out a 3-1 win over Purdue senior Sean Schmaltz at 133 pounds as Schmaltz had a takedown attempt go awry in the final seconds resulting in two points for Humphrey. OSU picked up its third fall of the match at 141 pounds as eighth-ranked J Jaggers flattened Boilermaker sophomore Matt Redmond in just 0:50.
The rematch between Purdue's 15th-ranked junior Jake Patacsil and sixth-ranked Buckeye sophomore Lance Palmer at 149 pounds left little disappointment as it came down to the wire for the second straight year. Palmer opened the match with a takedown and rode out Patacsil for the 2-0 lead and 2:30 of riding time. Patacsil responded in the second with a three-point nearfall to earn a 3-2 advantage, but Palmer took a neutral start in the third and grabbed his second takedown to build a 4-3 lead. Patacsil was within seconds of a reversal in the closing ticks of the clock, but came up just short. The official awarded Patacsil's escape to even the match at 4-4, but Palmer's riding time earned the 5-4 victory.
OSU rolled the lead to 31-0 at 157 and 165 as Jason Johnstone rode an early 8-2 advantage to a 12-7 win over sophomore Nick Bertucci at 157, and undefeated OSU freshman Colt Sponseller won his 14th straight, posting a 20-12 major decision over Purdue sophomore Justin Fraga.
Corpe prevented the shutout at 174 pounds, but third-ranked sophomore Mike Pucillo responded for the Buckeyes at 184 with a 12-4 major decision over Purdue freshman A.J. Kissel. Kissel put Pucillo in a dangerous position late in the second period, reversing him and securing his left arm to start working a bar, but time expired saving the Buckeye.
Brown closed the match on a high note for the Boilermakers, but OSU still left West Lafayette with the big win and defended its lofty national ranking.
The Boilermakers return to action on Friday as they host 16th-ranked archrival Indiana University.
