BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Purdue Nine fell for the fourth straight time to start the 2008 season, dropping a 4-1 contest to Western Kentucky on Friday evening at Nick Denes Field.
The loss is the eighth consecutive for the Boilermakers, dating back to last season.
Matt Bischoff (0-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings on the hill. Bischoff yielded five hits and three walks against four strikeouts. Andy Loomis finished the game for Purdue, allowing two hits in the final 1.1 innings.
WKU scored twice on a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fourth inning by Jeremy Coleman. The Hilltoppers loaded the bases with one out and picked up the game-winning hit with a 2-2 count and two down in the inning.
Purdue answered with a single run in the fifth on an RBI single by Eric Nielsen, scoring Alex Jaffee from second base. Jaffee led off the inning with a double down the right field line.
The Hilltoppers scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Boilermakers were out-hit by Western Kentucky, seven to six. Purdue stranded eight runners on bases, including five in scoring position.
Purdue and WKU return to Nick Denes Field on Saturday for Game Two of the weekend's three-game series. The game begins at 3 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on the web and in the Lafayette area on WSHY 1410 AM beginning at 2:50 p.m.
