WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's 44th-ranked women's tennis team (2-4) dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 51 Oregon Sunday. But despite the loss, head coach Laura Glitz said this was the Boilermakers' best weekend of competition.
"I thought we really came together as a team this weekend," she said. "Once again we played with great energy and enthusiasm and really supported one another. We played two real good teams this weekend and we came close to beating them both."
Purdue led off the match winning the doubles point for a second-straight afternoon. Cigdem Duru and Joanna Craven came all the way back from a 6-1 deficit to tie it at 6-6, then claimed the final three points to beat Celine Rolly and Stephanie Macfarlane 9-7.
Brooke Beier and Alejandra Boeker evened the doubles count at 1-1 with their 8-6 win at No. 2 over Anna Powaska and Siobhan Cavan.
Seniors Beier and Duru went on to win their singles matches as well.
Beier turned back Rolly at No. 1, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1, and Duru came back from a set down to top Powaska at No. 2, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Duru had a fantastic weekend out West in Washington and Oregon as she was the lone Boilermaker to win all four of her matches. The Istanbul, Turkey, native now owns matching 5-4 records in singles and doubles.
Purdue's singles' success did not extend throughout the lineup as they lost at the No. 3 through 6 positions. The Boilermakers entered this weekend at a disadvantage as redshirt junior Stephanie Wooten stayed home to battle the flu. Her absence forced everyone but Beier and Duru to move up one spot in the lineup.
The Boilermakers will play host to their first home weekend series of the season this Saturday and Sunday, welcoming in Virginia Tech and DePaul.
