PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Purdue wrestling team improved its dual record to 4-2 Friday night, topping Drexel University, 35-6, at North Penn High School in Philadelphia. Junior tri-captain Jake Patacsil highlighted the night, tying Purdue's all-time record for back points with his 391st career tally.
Patacsil used seven consecutive two-point nearfalls to score a 16-0 technical fall over Drexel's Andrew Walmsey and tie the Boilermakers' career mark. He now shares the record with first-year head coach Scott Hinkel, who set the total from 1984-87. Patacsil also has 107 back points on the season, which is good for sixth in Purdue history.
Other highlights from the match included Freshmen A.J. Kissel and Logan Brown's back-to-back pins at 184 and 197 pounds. Kissel picked up his team-best 11th pin of the season, sticking Justin Vieller at the 5:40 mark in the third frame, while Brown's fall is his second of the year as he pinned Kyle Frey in 1:39. Kissel's season total is already tied for seventh in Purdue's single-season history after just 22 matches of his collegiate career.
Also scoring victories for the Old Gold and Black were senior Sean Schmaltz, junior Nick Corpe and sophomores Matt Redmond, Jason Martin and Chris Kasten. Schmaltz topped Billy Martin at 133 pounds by decision, 8-2, while Corpe edged Scott Hunter at 174, 5-3. Redmond earned a 2-0 sudden-victory win over Morgan Remillard at 141 pounds, Martin topped Billy Hayat at 165, 8-3 and Kasten took home a medical-forfeit at 285.
Purdue is now 2-0 all-time against the Dragons, and return to action on Friday, January 19 against the Air Force Academy at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility.
