WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind- Junior Danielle Campbell posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Purdue to victory in exhibition play over the Hoosier Lady Stars 77-54 on Sunday at Mackey Arena. Redshirt juniors Natasha Bogdanova and Lakisha Freeman also had strong games for the Boilermakers, with Bogdanova posting 13 points and six rebounds and Freeman pouring in 19 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Purdue pulled away in the second-half after a first-half in which the Lady Stars managed to keep the score close. The Lady Stars jumped out early, hitting their first two shots to go up 4-0, but that was their biggest lead of the night. After the Lady Stars' Courtney Urquhart hit a pair of free throws to knot the score up at 21-21, FahKara Malone scored on a nice driving layup to put Purdue up 23-21. The Boilermakers led by no less than four the rest of the way after Malone's basket.
After going into the intermission up 35-30 Purdue came out in the second-half and scored five unanswered points to open up the biggest lead of the night at 40-30 and used a late 20-4 run to seal the 23-point victory.
The Boilermakers got a three-point basket from the left side by Freeman that pushed their lead to 38-30 and then Campbell put in a nice eight-foot turnaround jumper to extend the lead to 40-30. Versyp said it was good to see Campbell have a consistent game and that the Boilermakers will need her to be big in the post this season.
"Danielle is consistent in practice and it was nice to see that in a game," head coach Sharon Versyp said. "She's our go-to in the post this year."
In the final 7:37 the Boilermakers went on their 20-4 run, getting six points from Bogdanova, including two consecutive impressive baskets in the low post, increasing Purdue's lead from 64-52 to 68-52.
"In the second half we did a really good job defensively and we were able to run really well," Versyp said.
The Boilermakers second-half defensive pressure limited the Lady Stars to 32-percent second half shooting, which created scoring opportunities for Purdue. The Boilermakers had 14 second-half points off turnovers compared to four in the first half. Freeman, who had 11 second-half points and was 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the second half said the Boilermakers defense will allow them to jumpstart their offense.
"We really picked it up in the second-half and came out with a lot of energy. We pressured the ball and our defense is to going to create offense," Freeman said.
Purdue opens up the regular season at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, when the Boilermakers play host to Valparaiso in Mackey Arena.
