WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Of freshman Eric Ramos, Purdue men's tennis coach Tim Madden says the rookie, "exudes confidence."
Ramos' confidence was on display this weekend at the Purdue Fall Invitational, winning the 'C' singles flight and an 'A' doubles crown with sophomore Paul Foley.
Ramos and Foley did not receive the opportunity to play the title match because of an injury to the opposition, but Madden said the newly created combo still deserves to be called champions.
"They certainly played like champions this weekend and have all season long," said Madden. "This was a good weekend for our team. We needed to get some wins under our belt and receive that extra boost of confidence."
Ramos and Foley defeated the Iowa tandem of Bart van Mansjou and J.P. Ritchie 8-3, and the Butler duo of Eric Breitenbach and Chris Herron 8-4 in improving their overall record to 5-0.
Ramos went 3-0 in the 'C' singles bracket, dispatching all his opponents in straight sets. The Alameda, Calif., native beat Iowa Hawkeyes Walker Grimes and Tommy George in the first and championship rounds, and Marquette's Brett Binkley in between.
Purdue copped a second singles title in the 'D' flight thanks to a comeback win by D.J. Johnson over Iowa's Greg Holm, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Johnson, a freshman from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., beat Iowa's Patrick Dwyer, 6-4, 6-4, and Marquette's Graydon Klassen, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 before reaching the championship match.
Purdue's next competition is the ITA Regionals, which begin this Thursday, Oct. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
