WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The new doubles combination of sophomore Paul Foley and freshman Eric Ramos quickly gelled this weekend at the Tom Fallon Invitational, posting victories over teams from Michigan, Ball State and host Notre Dame.

Foley and Ramos won tiebreakers over their Wolverine and Fighting Irish opposition, making their 8-4 win over Ball State's Jorge Rodriguez and Eduardo Pavia look somewhat easy.

Foley and Ramos began Friday with a 7-6 (11-9) win over the Michigan tandem of Andrew Mazlin and Chris Madden. Saturday night they beat Notre Dame's Santiago Montoya and Stephen Havens 9-8 (7-5) to finish the weekend at 3-0.

Singles competition was not as pleasant for the Boilermakers. Freshman Eren Turkmenler scored two of the team's three individual wins and Ramos picked up the third, beating Ball State's Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-1.

Turkmenler, a native of Turkey, beat Western Michigan's Bryan Norville 6-4, 6-3, and Ball State's Bret Berryman, 6-4, 6-2.

Turkmenler also combined with junior Griffin Nienberg to topple the Cardinal's Joe Vallee and Daniel Vidal 8-5.

Boilermaker head coach Tim Madden was not pleased with all the results, but realizes there is still tons of tennis left to be played.

"It was a slow start, but that's all it was - a start, we have to keep everything in perspective," said the 14th-year head coach. "The team has a lot to learn and to work on in practice, and there's no better way to evaluate the talent we have than through more competition."

The Boilermakers next compete at home the weekend of Oct. 13 and 14 for the Purdue Invitational, which will feature several Midwestern schools.
