OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of four-run innings by the Miami RedHawks were too much for the Purdue Nine to overcome as the Boilermakers dropped a 9-4 non-conference decision on Tuesday afternoon at Miami's McKie Field.
The Boilermakers had built an early 3-0 lead but were outscored 9-1 the rest of the way, losing for the 10th time in their last 12 games.
Purdue is now 19-24 with 11 games left in the regular season, eight in the Big Ten Conference schedule.
The Boilermakers put two runs on the scoreboard with two outs in the first inning on RBI hits by Dan Black and Drew Madia. With two down Ryne White got the rally started with a single to left-center and Black followed with a double off the wall in left-center to plate White from first. Madia lined a single into right in the next at-bat to drive home Black for a 2-0 Purdue lead.
In the second inning the Boilermakers struck for another two-out run as Jon Moore drove his first home run as a Boilermaker over the fence in left, giving Purdue a 3-0 lead.
A four-run third inning for the RedHawks, highlighted by Eric Darlage's three-run homer down the left field line, put Miami up 4-3.
Purdue tied the score in the visitor's fourth on a safety squeeze by Nick Overmyer. Singles by Eric Osborn and Eric Nielsen set up Overmyer's RBI bunt.
Miami scored in the bottom of the fourth to regain a one-run lead at 5-4 on a sacrifice fly to center by leadoff batter Evan Armitage.
A four-spot for the RedHawks in the fifth inning upped the Miami advantage to 9-4. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Jeff Carroll past the diving attempt in center by Moore.
Andrew Groves (0-2) was hit with the loss in a relief role, allowing five runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings of work.
Purdue returns home to Lambert Field for a Wednesday non-conference contest against Indiana State. A 4 p.m. first pitch is scheduled for the Boilermakers and Sycamores.
