UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Tony Sedlmeyer picked up his sixth win and Spencer Ingaldson had four hits as the Purdue Boilermakers bested the Penn State Nittany Lions in Sunday's first game of a twilight twinbill at Medlar Field 6-1.
The Boilermakers improved to 19-22 overall and 9-13 in the Big Ten Conference, trying to keep pace with the Illinois Fighting Illini for the sixth slot in the conference tournament field.
Purdue didn't waste any time in taking the lead against the Lions as Ryne White connected on his fifth home run of the season in the first inning, a two-run blast deep over the right field wall.
Penn State cut the Boilermaker lead in half with a single run in the second. A leadoff double by Mike Deese came around to score on a doubleplay ball by Brian Ernst.
The Boilermakers added two in the third on an RBI grounder by Jeff Mojzik and a error off the bat of Dan Black.
Purdue tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth inning on singles by John Cummins, Dan Stahl and Spencer Ingaldson.
Ingaldson was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, his third four-hit game of the 2007 season. As a team the Boilermakers out-hit the Nittany Lions 10-6.
Seldmeyer improved to 6-3 on the season, tying Ricky Heines for the team lead in victories. The freshman went 5.0 inning on the mound, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Josh Lindblom came out of the pen to record the final six outs to close the game.
