WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Nine spotted Iowa a four-run lead before the offense came to life as the Boilermakers ran away from the Hawkeyes with a 13-4 win at Lambert Field in the first game of the Big Ten series.
Purdue (20-25, 10-14) registered a season-best 20 hits as seven Boilermakers had multiple-hit performances, led by four-hit efforts by Ryne White and Jeff Mojzik.
Matt Bischoff (3-1) picked up the win with a 7.0-inning effort, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six. Bischoffhas now struckout 55 batters for the season, just two behind the Purdue freshman record of 57 set by Matt Kinzer in 1982.
Trailing 4-0 after Iowa (27-16, 14-9) plated all four runs in the second inning, the Boilermakers scored once in the third and then opened the flood gates in the fifth with a four-spot of their own.
The Boilermakers added three runs in the sixth and then washed the game away with five runs in the eighth to cap the scoring at 13-4.
Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, White tied the game with one swing against Iowa starter Steve Turnbull. The Purdue sophomore laced a three-run home run over the right field wall, his team-leading sixth longball of the season, driving in Spencer Ingaldson and Eric Osborn before him. Eric Nielsen drove in the eventual winning run four batters later with a single that scored Mojzik from third.
Three runs in the sixth on three hits and a pair of Hawkeye errors gave the Boilermakers a four-run cushion at 8-4. Mojzik picked up the lone RBI of the inning with a single that drove home White from third. Purdue's first two runs of the inning when White's infield single was thrown away by Iowa's third baseman, allowing Ingaldson and Osborn to come plateward.
The Purdue bats did not fall silent with an 8-4 lead as five runs crossed the plate in the eighth on four hits and another Iowa error, the fourth miscue by the Hawkeyes on the afternoon. A Mojzik double drove home White with the inning's first run before an error on a pickoff attempt by Iowa pitcher Jason Belk and a wild pitch brought home Mojzik. Jon Moore's two-run double to left and an RBI single by White ended the Purdue onslaught.
White and Mokzik were each 4-for-6 on the day, with White scoring three runs and driving in four. Mojzik scored a pair and drove in two more, while Ingaldson, Osborn and Nick Overmyer also scored two runs.
Bischoff was relieved by Josh Lindblom and Allan Donato, each pitching one scoreless inning.
Purdue and Iowa return to Lambert Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, a twinbill that can be heard on WLAS 1410 AM in the Lafayette area and on the Web at purduesports.com.
