WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Nick Overmyer had three hits and scored the winning run as the Purdue Nine claimed the opening game of a Big Ten weekend series against intrastate rival Indiana 4-2 at Lambert Field.
Overmyer went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in the tying run in the sixth inning and scoring the winning run in the same inning. Overmyer's sixth-inning single drove home John Cummins and came around to score on a base hit up the middle by Alex Jaffee.
Tony Sedlmeyer (4-2) picked up the win, pitching 6.0 innings in his first collegiate Friday start. Sedlmeyer allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Matt Bischoff closed out the game for his second save of the season, pitching the final three innings. Bischoff yielded just one hit while walking two and striking out one.
Indiana (13-15, 3-6 Big Ten) got on the scoreboard first with a third-inning solo home run by Chris Hervey, his first home run and the Hoosiers' second homer of the season.
The lead was short-lived as Purdue (14-12, 4-4 Big Ten) plated a third-inning run on Jeff Mojzik's sacrifice fly to right field, driving home Spencer Ingaldson from third.
The Hoosiers regained the lead in the fifth when Hervey singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a RBI single by Evan Crawford.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, the Boilermakers picked up there two-run inning to grab a 3-2 lead, an advantage they would not surrender. Purdue tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Eric Osborn singled with two outs and scored on a Jon Moore triple down the left field line.
Ingaldson, Jaffee, Cummins and Ryne White joined Overmyer with multi-hit games. The Boilermakers out-hit Indiana 13-7, reaching double-digit hits for the 15th time in 26 games.
Purdue and Indiana return to Lambert Field for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Forecasts call for a game time temperature of 39 degrees with a 50%-chance of showers.
