BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Purdue Boilermakers claimed the weekend series against the Samford Bulldogs with a 7-6 win on Sunday at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Purdue improved to 7-7 on the season with the win.
The Boilermakers scored three runs in the eighth inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit. A home run by Ryne White led off the inning, then Alex Jaffee's triple to right-center tied the game, scoring Dan Black from first. A sacrifice fly by Jon Moore plated Jaffee with the eventual winning run.
Matt Bischoff pitched the final two innings to pick up his first collegiate save, just four days after he won his first college start against UAB.
Jordan Comadena led off the game with a home run, but Samford answered in the bottom of the first with a run to tie the game at 1-1. The teams traded two-run innings in the third, then went to the seventh tied 3-3.
Kyle Reesing's RBI single in the seventh gave the Boilermakers the lead, but two solo homers by the Bulldogs in the home half of the inning gave Samford a 5-4 advantage, setting up the offensive eighth inning for Purdue.
The Boilermakers return to the road next weekend with a three-game series in Macomb, Ill., against the Western Illinois Leathernecks. The weekend series will be broadcast on the internet at purduesports.com
