WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Zach Schultz and Danny Cox made history Friday night in Minneapolis, becoming the first Boilermaker diving combination to score together at the NCAA Championships and earn Honorable Mention All-America status.
Schultz placed 15th off the 3-meter with 332.60 points, while Cox was a place behind in 16th with 327.25 points.
Auburn's Steve Segerlin won the 3-meter title with 415.80 points.
Current Purdue senior Steven LoBue earned four All-America awards over parts of the last two seasons, but he won those on his own. Such was the case with diver John Vogel from 1960-1962, William Clingenpeel in 1952, Murray Hubley in 1949 and Major Willis in 1946 and 1948.
Schultz and Cox are in good position to repeat as All-Americans through the years to come as Schultz is a sophomore and Cox a freshman. Head diving coach Adam Soldati also claims two more Zone qualifiers and Big Ten finalists on his roster: freshmen Kyle Mitrione and J.P. Perez.
Purdue junior Romain Maire again just missed a consolation final swim at NCAAs, placing 21st in the 400 individual medley in 3:50.45. Maire will compete in his main event tomorrow, the 200 back, while Cox and Schultz climb 10-meters to jump off the platform tower.
The Boilermakers stand in 26th-place after two days of competition with 15 points.
