AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The Purdue University wrestling team finished the first day of the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Thursday, with 7.5 points as all four Boilermakers rolled to the second round of wrestle-backs.
First-year Justin Fraga scored the Boilers' first win of the tournament, picking up a 16-8 major decision over Tim Sayers of Tennessee-Chattanooga at 165 pounds. Fraga dominated the match in the first period, taking Sayers down twice and allowing a pair of escapes for the 4-2 lead. Sayers battled back in the second, escaping and taking Fraga down to grab a 5-4 edge, but a late Fraga reversal put Purdue back on top, 6-5, to end the frame. Fraga solidified his advantage in the third, escaping and scoring a takedown to go ahead, 9-5, and then after losing his grip, putting Sayers back on the mat for an 11-6 advantage. The pair traded reversals in the final 10 seconds and Fraga picked up the major decision with a two-point nearfall and over two minutes of riding time for the 16-8 final.
However, Fraga fell to top-seeded Johnny Hendricks of Oklahoma State in the second round to fall to the wrestle backs. Fraga managed a third-period takedown on Hendricks, but it was the only offense he would muster and it proved too little, too late as Hendricks sealed the 21-5 technical fall at the 5:45-mark.
Senior captain Nathan Moore was knocked off in the first round of the 197-pound tournament by eighth-seeded Joel Flaggert from Oklahoma. Flaggert used a pair of first-period takedowns to build an early advantage and never looked back en route to a 7-3 win. Moore avenged the loss with a 12-0 major decision over Jacob Bryce of North Dakota State to move on to Friday's competition. Moore was overwhelming in the match, earning three takedowns and a pair of two-point nearfalls, while piling up almost five minutes of riding time.
Both Purdue sophomores fell by pinfall in the first round as 149-pounder Jake Patacsil was stuck by Missouri's Joshua Wagner at the 6:25-mark, while 157-pounder Jake Murphy got stuck in a takedown early and was pinned at 1:11 by Rider's Nathan Galloway.
Murphy rebounded in the evening session with a 4-2 consolation pig-tail victory over Jonny Bonilla-Bowman of Virginia. Murphy scored a takedown with just under 45 seconds left in the first period and followed with a pair of escapes in the second to sit on the solid win. He followed with a 5-2 win over Oklahoma State's Newly McSpadden in the consolation first round as he scored the only takedown of the match to secure the win. He spun behind McSpadden just over a minute and a half into the match and proceeded to pile up almost three minutes of riding time. McSpadden finally reversed Murphy in the waning seconds of the second, but Murphy quickly escaped to hold a 3-2 edge. Murphy held off his foe's numerous attempts to turn him in the third and finally escaped and added the riding-time point to earn the win. Murphy will square off with William Rowe of Oklahoma in tomorrow's second consolation round.
Patacsil bounced back from his first-round loss with an 8-0 major decision over Rider's Michael Kessler. Patacsil spent over four minutes in the top position after taking Kessler down at the 1:55-mark. The Purdue lead grew to 4-0 with a two-point nearfall in the second, and Patacsil added an escape, a takedown and a riding-time tally in the third for the major decision and team bonus point. He advances to the next consolation round where he will meet Cleveland State's Ryan Hurley. Patacsil and Hurley met at the Boilermaker Duals on Jan. 6, where Patacsil took home a 5-3 decision.
Session III is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with the championship semifinals and the consolation second and third rounds.
