WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 36th-ranked Boilermaker women's tennis team (2-1) pitched its second-straight shutout Sunday afternoon, blanking the DePaul Blue Demons, 7-0. Purdue shut down Butler in similar fashion last week.
"It was an excellent day of tennis, everybody did a great job," said Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo.
"Given our circumstances dealing with some illness, today could have been more challenging. But our players fought through their sickness and made everything easier than it should have been. "
Iandolo was especially pleased with the efforts of his No. 1 and 2 singles players Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beier. He defined their performances as "unbelievable."
Voelker, ranked 63rd nationally by the ITA, walked over Beatrix Csordas, 6-1-, 6-2. Csordas came into Sunday's match ranked 13th in the ITA's Midwest Region.
Beier defeated Dunja Antunovic, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. The loss was Antunovic's first of the spring season and first to a Big Ten opponent, dropping her to 4-1. Earlier this month, Antunovic beat Northwestern's Samantha Murray, 6-2, 6-4, and Indiana's Laura McGaffigan, 6-4, 6-2.
As a team, Beier and Voelker demolished Antunovic and Petra Rehusova at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru, playing together for the first time this season, routed Csordas and Kirsten Gambrell at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
Duru's singles win at No. 5 over Bojana Murisic, 6-2, 6-1, was the 50th of her career. Since transferring to Purdue from Texas Tech last summer, the Istabul native is 8-7 through the fall and spring campaigns.
Anna Dzeva won her fifth-straight match since the start of spring, defeating Gambrell in straight sets at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-3. Dzeva is 3-0 in dual matches.
The Boilermakers face a tough test next Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center when they play host to No. 25 William and Mary. The dual begins at 11 a.m.
