Broncos Blanked By Boilermakers 7-0

Feb. 13, 2007

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Even though the 35th-ranked Boilermakers (3-2) are stuck in Kalamazoo tonight because of wintry conditions, at least they'll be in good mood following this afternoon's 7-0 win over Western Michigan (6-4).

Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo considers the Broncos the equivalent of a No. 5 through 7th-ranked team in the Big Ten.

"They are the dominant team of the MAC conference and we've had a tough time winning up here in the past," said Iandolo. "This was a good win; it's difficult to beat them if they are not taken seriously."

Purdue began the dual with two of three doubles wins at No. 1 and 2 spots.

The 20th-ranked combo of Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beier beat Carrie Jeanmaire and Kerstin Pahl, 8-4. Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru dismissed Ashley Moccia and Noriko Saruta, 8-6.

The Boilermakers came close to a clean sweep, but the No. 3 doubles duo of Randi Schuler and Anna Dzeva lost in nailbiting fashion to Priyanka Parekh and Emily Dudzik, 9-8 (6).

Despite the lopsided nature of the final score, the Boilermakers didn't exactly have the easiest time rounding up the Broncos.

Both Beier and Vaez went to three sets with their opponents at No. 2 and 4 singles, and Voelker played two prolonged sets at No. 1 vs. Pahl, 6-4, 7-5.

"Mal has done a great job this season holding down the top spots in both singles and doubles," said Iandolo.

Duru and Lauren Shumate posted easy wins at No. 5 and 6, while Schuler took the first set before Parekh retired.

"Cigdem is becoming one of the bright spots of our lineup," said Iandolo. "She has definitely stepped up and is playing great tennis throughout the match."

The Boilermakers have a few days off before their next competition, a 6 p.m. match at Big Ten rival Illinois on Feb. 23.
