WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 35 Purdue (2-2) lost to No. 25 William & Mary (5-0) 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Randi Schuler led the Boilermakers with victories at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Seeing her first action since a Jan. 28 win over Butler, Schuler beat Magdalena Bresson in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and teamed with Anna Dzeva for a 8-3 victory over Barb Zidek and Lauren Sabcinski.
Junior Cigdem Duru also won at No. 5 singles over Zidek, 7-5, 6-4, improving to 3-0 in dual matches this season.
Beyond those handful of triumphs, little else went the Boilermakers way against the Tribe, but they refused to go do without a fight.
"The team battled well and it's tough not to come away with a victory," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We're going to turn this loss into a positive and we'll grow from the experience."
The top match of the day was found on the No. 1 doubles court, which featured No. 20 Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beier against the nation's No. 1 duo of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic.
With the match tied at 7-7, Zoricic executed three-straight drop shots from in front of the net to give her team a one-point lead. Zoricic was able to spin her shots off to her right so that neither Beier or Voelker could chase them down from the back line.
Moulton-Levy and Zoricic ended up taking the set, 9-7, giving William & Mary the doubles point.
"That was a great match at No. 1 doubles," said Iandolo. "We played well, but we're disappointed that we did not get the point. I think the doubles combos we put out there today will pay off in the long run."
Moulton-Levy and Zoricic also topped Beier and Voelker in singles action.
The nation's No. 5 player, Moulton-Levy beat Voelker at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3, and Zoricic beat Beier 6-2, 6-3.
Voelker's three losses this season have all been to nationally ranked opponents, but Iandolo has confidence she'll turn things around.
"Mal keeps getting better every time out, and she was in position to win that first set. I just can't say enough about that effort, but Moulton-Levy is the No. 5 player for a reason; she's very crafty."
Purdue next competes Tuesday at Western Michigan. The dual is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
