WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A day removed from its 4-3, four-hour loss to No. 31 Tennessee Saturday, the No. 40 Purdue women's tennis team (1-1) made quick work of the Butler Bulldogs (0-2), beating them 7-0 in a span of two hours.
"The team bounced back well from a hard-fought loss to Tennessee," said women's head coach Mat Iandolo. "Our focus helped us make short work of matches where there could have been some problems."
All the Boilermaker singles players beat their opponents in straight sets, including newcomers Cigdem Duru and Alejandra Boeker, who shut out Bulldogs Ashley Harrison and Carrie Rachon, 6-0, 6-0.
No. 63 Mallory Voelker allowed only one point through two sets at the No. 1 position, beating Tiffany McLoughlin, 6-1, 6-0. And at No. 2 singles, freshman Neela Vaez was the second one finished after dispatching Michelle Hawes, 6-1, 6-1.
Rookie Lauren Shumate defeated Molly Casperson at No. 3 singles in the day's longest match, 7-5, 6-2; Anna Dzeva climbed to 4-0 this spring with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Becky Jenkins.
Prior to her singles win, Dzeva teamed with Boeker to blank Harrison and Rachon, 8-0.
Also winning in doubles were the teams of Vaez and Schuler (8-1 over McLoughlin/Hawes) and Shumate and Duru (8-4 over Casperson/Jenkins).
Purdue next competes on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. vs. DePaul. Admission for all Boilermaker home tennis matches is free.
