Depth Jam

Jan. 21, 2007

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind - The Boilermakers certainly didn't look like the No. 40 team in the country this weekend at the Virginia Team Invitational. They looked better.

For a third-consecutive afternoon, the Old Gold and Black won a majority of their matches in convincing fashion. Friday's victim was No. 13 VCU; on Saturday, it was SEC Western Division champ Alabama, and Sunday it was Big Ten Conference rival Wisconsin.

The Boilermakers didn't fare too well at the top positions, as Mallory Voelker lost in straight sets to tournament champion Caitlin Burke, and Randi Schuler and Neela Vaez lost to Burke and Elizabeth Carpenter in doubles, 8-1.

However, the depth and strength of the Boilermakers' roster more than made up for those defeats.

Schuler and Vaez rebounded from their doubles loss to earn straight-set singles victories. Schuler beat Kaylan Catai, 6-0, 6-3, and Vaez dispatched Carpenter, 6-3, 6-2. Lauren Schumate, Alejandra Boeker and Anna Dzeva also won in straight sets as Purdue won six of seven singles.

Cigdem Duru had the longest day of work, but still came out on top after beating Morgan Tuttle, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Duru and Shumate also combined for a doubles win, defeating Beck and Chelsea Nusslock, 8-4.

Purdue won two of three doubles matches over the Badgers.

The Boilermakers debut at their new home, the Schwartz Tennis Center, this Saturday against Tennessee at 11 a.m. They'll also take on Butler as part of a doubleheader with the men's team Sunday afternoon.
