WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 40 Purdue women's tennis team rolled over the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday during the second day of competition at the Virginia Team Invitational.
The Boilermakers, led by junior Brooke Beier and sophomore Mallory Voelker, won five of seven singles contests and two of three doubles matches.
Head coach Mat Iandolo was more than pleased with the results.
"It's great to win that many matches especially when we're resting one of our top players (Randi Schuler) for singles. Opponents have a lot more respect for us than our No. 40 ranking would indicate; we are certainly getting their best shot."
Schuler, a 2006 All-Big Ten selection as a freshman, is expected to be back in tomorrow's lineup vs. Wisconsin, with Beier possibly getting a rest.
Beier and Voelker added to their early season win totals with a pair of singles victories and one together on the doubles court. Beier dispatched Alabama's Shelley Godwin 6-2, 6-4, while Voelker breezed through Mari Muller 6-1, 6-2.
The tandem was just as efficient in doubles, beating the Crimson Tide duo of Muller and Andrea Brenes, 8-2.
Anna Dzeva, Cigdem Duru and Neela Vaez all claimed their first wins of the season. Dzeva won a three-set decision over Alice Tunaru 7-5, 3-6, 6-3; Duru polished off Bianca Svensson 6-1, 6-2, and Vaez handed Brenes a quick 6-3, 6-2 defeat.
Vaez and Schuler improved their record to 2-0 following an 8-6 triumph over the Alabama combo of Nicole Briceno and Paulina Bigos.
The Boilermakers conclude their stay in Virginia Sunday with matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
