WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's women's tennis team began its 2007 spring season by winning five of nine matches during the first day of competition at the Virginia Team Invitational.
"Overall we had a pretty good day, but I still feel like there is room for improvement," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It was nice to win a majority of our matches, especially the ones against VCU, which is No. 13 in the country."
Veterans Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker recorded singles wins against the VCU Rams. Voelker dispatched Olga Borisova in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, while Beier took care of Vera Petrashevitch, 6-4, 6-1.
The 21st ranked team of Beier and Voelker didn't have as much luck on the doubles court, falling 8-3 to the Ram duo of Borisova and Marianna Yuferova.
Yuferova also beat Boilermaker Randi Schuler in singles, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, Schuler teamed with freshman Neela Vaez to beat Virginia's Pereira and Rales in nail biting fashion, 9-8 (4).
Freshman newcomer Lauren Shumate was the lone Boilermaker to post a perfect day. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native won her singles match in straight sets over Alabama's Paulina Bigos, 6-0, 6-1, and teamed with junior Cigdem Duru to beat the Crimson Tide tandem of Biros and Tunery, 8-3.
The Boilermakers resume action Saturday morning at the Virginia Team Invitational and are scheduled to play mostly against conference rival Wisconsin.
