ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan Wolverines defeated Purdue's men's swimming and diving team Friday afternoon 153-90. Sophomore diver Zach Schultz recorded the Boilermakers lone wins with 341.47 points off the 1-meter springboard and a personal best of 357.52 off the 3-meter.
The win improved No. 12 UM to 5-4 and dropped No. 19 Purdue to 4-5.
"Zach was our most outstanding athlete today," said head coach Dan Ross. "I'm very proud of the fact that he was able to step up and win for us while Steve (LoBue) and J.P. (Perez) are both hurt. He did a nice job."
Other highlights for Purdue included a season best of 16:06.30 by Travis Smith in the mile, and freshman newcomer Ilia Ayzenshtok posting a 50.80 100 back split in the meet opening 400 medley relay. Ayzenshtok's time was the second fastest recorded by a Boilermaker this season behind Romain Maire (50.26).
"They beat us good, but I felt like we were in every race but two," said Ross. "A lot of guys were near their season bests, but just got beat by the better team. We have to improve tomorrow."
Purdue concludes its two-day road swing Saturday afternoon at Michigan State. The conference dual begins at 2 p.m. EST.
