WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University wrestling team maintained its perfect dual record on the season, taking down Carson-Newman University, the University of Indianapolis and Ohio University at the fourth-annual Purdue Duals on Sunday. The Boilermakers topped Carson-Newman 32-7, Indianapolis 32-6 and Ohio 26-7 as they swept all three matches at 125, 149, 197 and 285 pounds and improved to 7-0.
As well as remaining undefeated on the year, Purdue also upheld its perfect all-time record against all three schools and improved to 12-2 in the history of the Purdue Duals. Ohio was the runner-up on the day, going 2-1, while Indianapolis went 1-2 and Carson-Newman went 0-3. Purdue senior Nathan Moore was named the Duals' Most Outstanding Wrestler, going 3-0 at 197 pounds with a technical fall, a major decision and a decision.
In the day's opening match, Purdue rolled through the first two matches against the Eagles as junior Brandon Tucker notched an 11-2 major decision at 125 pounds, while classmate Sean Schmaltz followed suit with an 8-3 decision over senior Jake Brumbelow. Carson-Newman freshman Kent Pierson put the Eagles on the board with a 15-4 major decision over Purdue freshman Nick Bertucci at 141 pounds, but the Boilermakers quickly regained control with wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds, highlighted by an 18-3 technical fall by Jake Murphy at 157, his second of the year, and sophomore Nick Corpe's nine-takedown performance at 174. Junior Nathan Jones secured Carson-Newman's only other points of the match with a win at 184. Moore and freshman heavyweight Chris Kasten closed out the match for the Boilermakers as Moore toppled freshman Tom Minwell for an 11-2 major and Kasten pinned sophomore Charles Robinson in 6:43.
The Boilermakers' second bout brought more of the same as they took home eight out of 10 matches against Indianapolis. The two squads traded thrillers at 125 and 133 as Tucker used a pair of takedowns in the final period to earn a 7-6 win over sophomore John Fleming, and Schmaltz's third-period comeback bid fell just short as he dropped a 9-8 decision to junior Shane Perkey. The Boilermakers won the next four matches in dominant fashion as senior Jason Cook, sophomore Jake Patacsil and freshman Justin Fraga each posted major decisions, including Fraga's six-takedown effort of senior Nick Lain at 165 pounds. Senior Mike Jackson stole a 10-5 decision for the Greyhounds at 174, but senior Nick Skinner, Moore and Kasten wrapped up the rout with a pinfall, a technical fall and a narrow 3-1 decision, respectively.
The last match of the day had big expectations as both Purdue and Ohio came into the match 2-0, but the Boilermakers made short work of any high hopes the Bobcats could have been carrying. Tucker and Schmaltz gave Purdue a 7-0 lead with 11-2 and 12-5 wins. Freshman Kevin Christensen lit the scoreboard for Ohio with a 4-3 come-from-behind win at 141 pounds to cut the lead to 7-3. The next three matches were all incredibly close, but Purdue managed to come out on the victorious end in all three as sophomore Mark Powell upended freshman Clay Tucker, 7-4, at 149 pounds, fellow sophomore Jake Murphy held on for a 5-4 decision over sophomore Jacob Frerichs at 157 pounds and freshman Justin Fraga used a last second takedown to overcome freshman Jacob Ison, who entered the match with two straight pinfalls in tow, at 165 pounds. This run squashed any hopes of a Bobcat comeback, and although junior Antoine Love secured a major decision for Ohio at 174, the Boilers won out for the clean sweep.
Tucker led the Boilermakers with 11 takedowns, followed closely by Moore and Schmaltz with 10 each and Fraga, who posted nine in just two matches. Moore paced the group on the ground with 11 back points, while Patacsil added to his team-leading total with seven.
Purdue returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Reno, Nev. for the Reno Tournament of Champions.
