WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Boilermaker freshman Neela Vaez won the Orange Bracket singles title Sunday at the Illinois Midwest Blast after beating the Illini's Megan Fudge in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Vaez advanced to the championship following a come-from-behind three-set win over Louisville's Lauren Irme on Saturday, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.

In addition to her singles success, Vaez also won three doubles matches over the weekend with teammate Alejandra Boeker. The Boilermaker duo beat Northern Illinois' Nao Umemura/Lilliam Asuaje 8-2 in the main draw, then in the back draw, beat Chrissy Nagel/Stephanie Okuma of NIU 8-1, and the Louisville team of Maria Klokotzky/Natalie Laszkowski 8-3.

Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beier completed their doubles sweep over the competition at the Arizona State Firebird Invitational. After beating the nation's No. 4 team of Kady Pooler/Roxanne Clarke (ASU) on Friday, Voelker/Beier defeated Pepperdine's Tania Rice/Sylvia Kosakowski 8-4 then took care of Cal's Stephanie Kusano/Marion Ravelojanoa 9-8 (5).

All of Purdue's doubles opponents, with the exception of Pepperdine's Rice, was nationally ranked in FILA's preseason poll. Pepperdine's Sylvia Kosakowski is ranked 46th in singles and 28th in doubles. Cal's Kusano, the No. 1 singles seed this weekend, is the nation's 60th best player.

In singles play, Voelker finished a respectable third after dropping her semifinal match to 90th-ranked and sixth-seeded Ravelojaona, 6-2, 6-2. Voelker was to play Pooler in the third-place match, but the Sun Devil withdrew due to injury.
