WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue claimed two titles Sunday at the William & Mary Invitational. Brooke Beier and Randi Schuler won the Flight B doubles championship and freshman Neela Vaez copped the Flight C Singles crown in her first collegiate tournament.
Beier and Schuler eliminated two opponents en route to staking their prize. They first beat the Virginia duo of Pereira/Alexander, 8-5, before polishing off the William & Mary tandem of Breeson/Kasztelanic, 8-6.
Beier also battled back to win the Flight B singles consolation bracket. After losing her first match Friday, Beier won three consecutive matches to place seventh of 16 entries.
Vaez hardly broke a sweat this weekend, beating three of four opponents in straight sets. In Sunday's championship, she beat Richmond's Robin Carter, 6-0, 6-1.
Vaez lost one set in three days of competition. After losing 7-5 to Penn's Charilie Tansill, the youngster responded with a 6-0 win in the deciding set.
Vaez' success did not carry over to the doubles court where she and Mallory Voelker lost both their matches to place fourth in Flight A.
Elsewhere on the singles court in Williamsburg, Va., Schuler and Voelker finished third and fourth in the A Flight. Voelker beat No. 69 Marianne Baker of Maryland, 6-2, 6-3, and Schuler's final opponent, Marianne Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth, withdrew.
