WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers had their hands full dealing with 27th-ranked Jenna Long of North Carolina during the second day of competition at the William & Mary Invitational.
Long first beat sophomore Mallory Voelker in the Flight A quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-2, then bumped Randi Schuler to the third-place match after winning, 6-3, 6-0.
Voelker will have her shot at revenge Sunday on the doubles court when she and freshman teammate Neela Vaez take on Long and Tsang in the Flight A semifinals. The UNC duo is the No. 1 seed, while Voelker and Vaez are seeded fourth.
Newcomer Vaez advanced to the finals of the Flight C bracket after knocking off Penn's Charlie Tansill in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-0, and Maryland's Michal Amir, 6-0, 6-0.
Veteran Brooke Beier rebounded well in the Flight B consolation bracket. A day removed from her first round loss, Beier responded with victories over Richmond's Pamela Duran, 7-5, 6-4, and Virginia's Amanda Rales, 3-6, 6-4, 12-10. She will face Marshall's 105th-ranked Lynzee Keever in the consolation championship match.
Beier and Schuler also advanced to the semifinals of the Flight B doubles bracket, beating the W&M tandem of Acharya/Zidek, 8-6.
Meanwhile in Tennessee at the St. Mary's Classic, the Boilermaker quartet of Cigdem Duru, Alejandra Boeker, Whitney Reys and Anna Dzeva continued to have a tough go of it.
Duru provided the team's lone highlight, advancing into the second flight consolation match following a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2, win over Eastern Tennessee State's Masha Ilina. Duru will face UNC's Laura Reichert in Sunday's consolation final.
